Alvin Joseph “Al” Voorhies Sr.
CROWLEY - Private services will be held at a later date for Alvin Joseph “Al” Voorhies Sr., 94, who died Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 6 a.m. at Encore Healthcare and Rehabilitation.
Alvin was born June 25, 1930, in Crowley to Violet Nelson Voorhies and Joe Voorhies. At an early age he became an altar boy at St. Micheal the Archangel Catholic Church. Shortly thereafter he became a member of Boy Scout Troop 5 and became an Eagle Scout.
He graduated from Crowley High School in 1947 and attended SLI in Lafayette (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette).
He was a past secretary of the Crowley Jr. Chamber of Commerce, was a member of the Crowley Town Club and was proud to have served on the Mardi Gras court.
Alvin served in the U.S. Army Field Artillery, 14th Armored Division (Hell on Wheels Division).
He held a Louisiana Real Estate license and retired as an Independent Factory sales representative. He was very active in the Lafayette and Acadia Parish Senior Olympics, an avid fisherman, and hunter in previous years.
Alvin enjoyed designing things, gardening, estate sales and being with family and friends. He enjoyed sporting around Crowley in his red Mazda Miata.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan Quibodeaux and husband Raymond, and Gail Greenman and husband Johnny, all of Crowley; four grandchildren, Aubrey Quibodeaux, Amy Greenman, Andrea Trahan (Brandon) and Angela Greenman (Kelly); five great-grandchildren, Sidney, Bryce, Carson, Marlee, and Tripp; one great-great-grandson, Tatum.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Violet Nelson Voorhies and Joe Voorheis; former wife, Rudell Stutes Voorhies; one son, Alvin J. Voorhies Jr.; beloved friend, Rebecca “Becky” Doucet.
Alvin donated his body to State of Louisiana – Bureau of Anatomical Services, LSU Health Sciences Center in the hopes of helping others in the advancement of medical education and research.
The family expresses their thanks to Acadian Ambulance, Ochsner Acadia General Hospital, Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center, Hospice of Acadiana – Calcutta House, Encore Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Lamm Hospice, and Dr. Robert Aertker for their compassionate care of Mr. Alvin this last month.
